“Under the guidance of my new preceptors I entered with the greatest diligence into the search of the philosopher’s stone and the elixir of life” (26).The philosopher’s stone is a stone believed by many alchemists able to transmute any metal into gold. The stone was also thought to have a connection to the elixir of life. The elixir of life would provide everlasting youth to any that drank from it. Both the philosopher’s stone and the elixir of life symbolize a state of perfection.
